One afternoon, Lucía found Dr. Vega standing by the window, watching Adrián play with Mateo on the floor.
“He was always afraid of failing,” he said quietly.
Lucía crossed her arms.
“So he ran?”
Dr. Vega nodded slowly.
“Yes. And in doing so… he failed anyway.”
Silence filled the room for a moment.
“But people can learn,” he added. “If they’re willing to face what they’ve done.”
Lucía looked at Adrián.
Then back at the doctor.
“I’m not giving him another chance,” she said calmly.
Dr. Vega gave a small, knowing smile.
“No,” he replied. “You’re giving him many small ones.”
Time passed.
And with time—
Came proof.
The day Mateo said his first word, Adrián was there.
The day Lucía got her promotion, Adrián was the one who brought home a cake.
The day everything felt overwhelming again—
He didn’t disappear.
He stayed.
One evening, as the sun dipped low and painted the room in gold, Lucía sat on the couch while Mateo played at her feet.
Adrián sat across from her.
Not too close.
Not too far.
“I know I can’t erase what I did,” he said quietly.
She didn’t respond.
“I just want to be someone he’s proud of,” he added, glancing at Mateo.
Lucía followed his gaze.
Then said something that changed everything:
“Then don’t be the man who left.”
